Painter's Statement - Marie Green

After stumbling about the world with tubes of oil paint and a variety of brushes tucked into the far corners of my life, finally I have works ready to exhibit. Aside from a five month study tour of the great galleries of Europe with my sister two decades ago and a few months of classes when living in Maryland USA, all my study and learning has been private. Over the years I have had space to create a few works which have sold but never until now have I had the delicious almost intoxicating opportunity to submit to the thrill of standing at my easel daily. Sore feet for sure, but oh what a feeling!

The leap from system engineer then project manager to artist evolved almost outside of my awareness as I settled into life in this magnetic part of Australia. Here there are countless sights of beauty, drama and interest and I just have to capture their essence - and I plan to continue capturing them as long as the sun shines or the storm clouds roll.

Since the mid-eighties I have practised in the impressionistic style, drifting in and out of influences from Monet and Whistler to Tom Roberts and Tim Storrier and greatly effected for reallism by the incredible wooden sculptures of ancient Japan that I saw in Kyoto. They are millennia ahead of Michaelangelo Buonarroti and I wonder this is not better recorded.

My own eclectic style has evolved and now I go to sleep at night planning what is on the easel for the next day and wake up planning how to mix this or that colour - its a passion that makes the air zing; best of all my husband shares my obsession with me. He is chief constructive critic and greatest supporter any painter could have.
