The real-life guide to living here

Agnes and Ecstasy – vol III                                  November 2005

We have now lived with Agnes Water for a little over three months.  Neither of us have ever been so happy or relaxed and it is an effort to remember living anywhere else – whoda thought!

Social Life at Agnes Water

Friends:  When moving into a small town such as Agnes Water,  it is essential to purchase land with neighbours who are people of similar tastes, style and age. They should be really delightful, articulate, fun people who take an active interest in their community and have an open, friendly attitude to newbies.  Being such a good shopper, I did indeed purchase acreage, at Josefski Road, that came with just such neighbors – Julie and John. And through the Js, we have met and been welcomed into a diverse, talented and interesting Agnes coterie.

Community:  Couple of months ago, my husband spotted a notice in the local rag calling interested folk to a reinvigoration meeting of the Get AgnePool logos Water a Swimming Pool group. So we turned up a little early to be sure of a seat.  As it turned out, that was risk management to the extreme, but a core of vibrancy did burgeon forth from that meeting after five years of wishing and hoArt workping and keeping the dream alive. Now the Discovery Coast Aquatic Community Center team is bursting with vigor, hard progress and well down the road with professional feasibility underway and invaluable Council support for this proposed Miriam Vale Shire asset using Queensland grant money to bring health, happiness and even some wealth to the area.  Get yourself some new togs to make a splash at the 2007 opening! Logo designed by Marci Russo.

Annual Art & Craft Show:  Being somewhat starved for The Arts, we dashed down to Rosedale for the annual Miriam Vale Arts & Crafts affair  not really expecting a great deal but knowing there was some excellent talent in the area having been to the local Garden Art Gallery in Agnes Water. Why, oh, why though, must naive be hung beside illustrative, rubbish beside exquisite, and no incandescent lighting to excite the eyeballs? We left very happy with two wonderful pastels at most reasonable prices and a fabulous patchwork jacket for moi. Also, we departed somewhat in awe of a lady named Elaine who stood arguably 5 foot who is the QCWA President, the Post Mistress, the owner of the Hardware store, and in our opinion a paragon of virtue blessed with a delicious sense of humour. Long may she Reign! Delightful pastel of New Guinea woman, by Lindsey Young, which came home with us.

Dog Tags:  Recent Council initiative to provide complimentary dog tags - Good thinking!  Sometimes its hard to tell the wild dogs from the tame guys as all wonder about unleashed with or without captured prey dangling from their jowls. (Not our Peppie of course! - but we are still city folk I guess as plastic bag scooping remains our norm).  However, do not have arthritis in the hands (or alternatively do have a large strong man - something I always recommend!) should you wish to actually use the purple dog tags that arrive promptly through the mail after application for same.
