Agnes and Ecstasy – vol XI

'Where there is no vision, the people perish' - Proverbs 29:18

OK - straighten up folks, we are on the hunt for the Agnes Water Vision cos 'perishing' is just not an option. My new Sea Change Home is not three months old and I have just planted a dozen rose bushes, not to mention 19 clumping bamboos - so any talk of perishing is OUT.

Now by Vision, I am thinking something akin to a plan - a goal tied to a way to get to that goal. A chairsure fire luscious though practical scheme for securing an expanding future for our village. A 'WOW' factor identified and complimented by lesser wow's but no wowsers!. A vision sufficiently robust to withstand petrol price hikes, rate increases, global warming/dimming, 5 week stinger invasions that close the beaches, closure of existing caravan parks for maybe-some-day-to-be-built-resorts. And strong enough to give apathy its marching orders and turn the 'neigh' sayers into devotees. A Vision glorifying and employing the natural wonders and exploiting the diversity of talent and knowledge amongst the local population. A Vision not dependent on pyramid selling or con jobs.

When I close my eyes, I can see an Agnes Water of

  • avenues of flowering trees and shrubs welcoming new arrivals,
  • the shops are all repainted gaily in the seaside theme of white, blue, yellow and dashes of lime green and pink.
  • Community field trips for bird watching and star gazing conducted for all at golden coin fee
  • The National Audubon Society chapters and the Astronomical Society of Australia all take their field trips here maybe hold their annual conventions
  • Sunday markets fill the Endeavour Plaza and folk can park any which way outside.
  • Twice a year there are craft fairs offering exquisite work by locals (no mass manufactured items allowed!). Patrons from Melbourne and Sydney arrive especially to purchase their Christmas gifts.
  • The Letter of the Law is set, but not in concrete.
  • The myriad little private paths decimating the beach dunes are replaced with public beach entrances covered by pavilions offering shade and shelter.
  • At least one public space in Agnes Water where you can park and see the sea and the beach and the surf just as expected in a seaside village
  • Art is actively fostered attracting groups to paint, sculpt, play and perform at summer and winter festivals
  • A secondary school, a public swimming pool
  • beach chairs and umbrellas for hire and cold drinks and ices for sale on the beach
  • A week long 1770 Festival during which all the town folk dress up in 1770 costume and compliment the festival's theme in various ways
  • A Council that managers and administrates, and Councilors who are lead by an entrepreneurial Mayor whose Vision is for the years ahead, not for last month.

And then I wake up.

Should you have a Vision you would like published here, email me. Names will be withheld if requested.
