On Arrival
Call into the Rural Transaction Center (sound like a local, call it the AARTEECEE ) smack in the center of town (big building on the left as you turn left to 1770) for non-commercial up to date local information on what's what and where. Internet cafe there also. Next, buy the Coastal Rag, our local newspaper costing 80c and the indispensable guide to what's happening for the week.
Observe that there are absolutely no Minor birds nor pigeons or rabbits but there is a plethora of native birds going about their business without fear or favour. Pretty faced wallabies (true name) shyly smile from suburban blocks and, along with kangaroos, literally line the grassy footpaths early morning and around sunset. Next be aware, be very aware, of The Bities.
1. Midges (minute veracious stinging evil life forms that need killing) wreck vengeance upon mankind around sunset and sunrise. They mainly prey on Ranches Estate people but if there is a Northerly blowing then no area is safe. (By the pleasant way - Flies en masse don't seem to holiday at Agnes although mossies have regular bookings).
2. Snakes in summer come down from the hills in droves but remember, 98% of snake bites happen when people are trying to kill a snake. Leave it alone and it will do likewise.
3. Everyone knows about the cane toads but should I mention the wild dogs? Well, they are about - one tried to take on our four wheel drive a couple of months back. And if that isn't enough, this is the sign that greets you at the Agnes Water beach entrance, should you eventually find it of course ...
Perhaps all the of the above expla ins in part why 'Service with a smile' is still a work in progress at many Agnes Water /1770 tourist establishments. There are stunning exceptions everywhere of course, like the Post Office Mistress Mary and all the staff in the Newsagency but tread warily in denizens such as the reef boat tours.
Town water is an acquired taste - unpleasant when you first arrive here though safe. Mega litre containers of bottled water are sold at both the supermarkets.
Incredible, nah ridiculous!, swags of money have been approved (AUD40,000,000 plus) to bring the joys of desalinated water to our little corner of the world. Hopefully the new amalgamated Council will have a final say on that allocation of funds.
